Our Deaf Studies curriculum is based on the Specialist Deaf Curriculum Framework. The framework has been designed to support deaf babies, children, young people and their families to develop knowledge and make informed and independent decisions about their deafness, from identification through to adulthood. At Hacton, Deaf Studies is taught by a Teacher of the Deaf. Each session is aimed at promoting a ‘D/deaf and unstoppable’ attitude, making children proud of their identity, encouraging them to build resilience and develop self-advocacy, preparing them for their onward educational journey and for adulthood. Here, not only do we support academic progress but also progress for secure social, emotional and mental health. Our curriculum combines these into 4 focus areas: Deaf Identity, Understanding Access to Sound, Managing Change and Communication and Language.
